Join us for the next Accessibility Café! Presented by the Queen’s Human Rights and Equity Office and The Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

In this presentation, Marsha’s talk will include her experiences as a First Nation Deaf woman, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her journey through joy and oppression.

Speaker:

Marsha Ireland - My name is Teyuhuhtakweku (Marsha) I am from Oneida Nation and Turtle Clan. I am Oneida. I am a Deaf, wife , mother , grandmother and great grandmother. My husband Max Ireland , is hearing who is member of Bear Clan. We have five Oneida Deaf children and also fourteen grandchildren that include two great granddaughters. I work to revitalized Oneida Sign Language (OSL). I have been invited to speak and engage with First Nations, providing presentations and education. I provide education regarding First Nations Deaf peoples lived experiences and the work with Oneida Sign Language. I have also provided our Thanksgiving address in my language, Oneida Sign Language. I consider myself an advocate and educator. Some people called me their elder. I work for our future generations, so their lives may be better than ours.

Join us for the next Accessibility Café! Presented by the Queen’s Human Rights and Equity Office & Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization (EDII) Faculty of Arts and Science.

Session Description:

This session is an introduction to the intersectionality between disability and queerness. It will touch on some main intersections between the two communities, highlight the value of disabled knowledge across all social movements, and inspire further education on the disabled community.

Speaker:

Elliot Moss (they/them) is a new public speaker, focused on spreading education and awareness on the queer and disabled community. They are trans nonbinary, queer, with multiple disabilities.

“I speak as an expert on my own experience navigating an ableist, queerphobic, capitalist world; the medical system, and public access. I subscribe to the social model of care, universal design, and radical love. I am a visual artist, poet, baker and blogger.”

Join us for the next Accessibility Café! Presented by the Queen’s Human Rights and Equity Office.

Session Description:

This session will introduce the concept of the accessible procurement life cycle and will explore the importance of accessibility and anti-ableist practices throughout the procurement process. Procurement of learning technologies, products and services is a central aspect of the education system. Accessible procurement conceptualizes a policy and practice framework to enhance the learner experience for students with disabilities, as well as the teaching experience for instructors with disabilities.

Speaker:

Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai is the world’s first congenitally blind geneticist. Mahadeo is Vice-President Research & International Affairs and Chief Accessibility Officer for the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), having previously served as a researcher at the University Health Network in Toronto. Dr. Sukhai is a leading expert on accessibility of graduate and postdoctoral research training in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and healthcare disciplines. Dr. Sukhai also holds adjunct faculty appointments at �鶹��վ (Kingston, ON), OCAD University (Toronto), and Ontario Tech University (Oshawa, ON). He is the chair of the Employment Technical Committee for Accessibility Standards Canada, as well as the external co-chair of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Expert Advisory Committee on Accessibility and Systemic Ableism.

In this presentation, we will explore how to decolonize our strategies and pathways to a more accessible future. We will learn about shifting our views about disability being an individual problem, to creating interdependent communities of care and the necessary steps to integrate accessibility as individuals, families, workplaces, and communities.

Gabe A’tugwewinu Calderón BSW/MSW (they/them) is two spirit, mixed white settler, Anishinabe & L'nu, currently living in Treaty 6 territory's Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) as an author, poet, mixed media artist, activist and educator.

You are invited to join us for an Accessibility Café and learn more about the accessibility features of the Duncan McArthur Hall project. Attendees will also learn more about the Built Environment Advisory Group (BEAG) and may apply to join the BEAG.

The redevelopment and expansion of the Duncan McArthur Hall (DMH) ‘A’ wing, will see a substantial addition to the building, and provide increased classroom, research, study, administration, and social spaces for both the Faculty of Education and elements of the Faculty of Heath Sciences.

Presented by the Queen’s University Built Environment Advisory Group (BEAG) and the Queen’s Human Rights and Equity Office.
