Mildred Eisenberg passed away peacefully on Jan. 7, 2025, in Toronto, just three months shy of her 100th birthday. She was predeceased by her brother, Tommy Levy and her husband, Philip Eisenberg. She is survived by her sons, Joel, Ian (and Susan), Eric (and Joni); sister-in-law, Peggy Levy; nephew, Allan Levy; grandchildren, Robert (and Hannah), and Meryl (and Chris Nirenberg); and great-grandchildren, Samuel, Liam, Miriam, Philip, and Jordan, as well as cherished cousin, Stan Albert. 

The term “lifelong learner” is often used, but rarely does it apply so aptly as it does to Mildred. Despite growing up during a time when women were not expected to work (or to work as a secretary, as she was encouraged to do by her mother and friends), Mildred believed she was capable of much more. She attended Queen’s, where she obtained her teacher’s degree in 1943. She began teaching primary school right away to support herself, but continued to pursue her studies during the summer months and part time during the school year, eventually graduating with her BA from Queen’s in 1949. 

Over the next 30 years, she raised her three sons Ian, Joel, and Eric in Montreal, and with the loving support of her husband, Phil, she continued to pursue her education, obtaining her MA (double masters of Arts and Education) from McGill University in 1968, and her Ph.D (psychology) from the Université de Montréal in 1977. Along the way, she was appointed to a Quebec government school commission and served as chairman (as was the designation at the time) of the board of governors of Vanier College. 

At the 50th anniversary reunion of the Baron Byng high school class she taught, she was honoured for her dedication and ability to teach, to instill a love of learning, and to motivate others. One of her students recounted that Mildred was the only teacher who ever believed in her potential and credited her with being the one who motivated her to pursue and ultimately realize her career dreams. To paraphrase a piece of Jewish wisdom: “One who changes a life changes the world.” Mildred did this hundreds of times over during her career as a teacher, guidance counsellor, and later professional psychologist, focusing on helping teenagers and young adults. 

She always pushed her children – and later grandchildren – to pursue higher education, and was very proud of her grandchildren Meryl (Artsci’12, Ed’13) and Robert (MPA’12, JD’14) for following in her footsteps at Queen’s. Meryl lived in Ban Righ Hall, just as Mildred had done 70 years before, and continues to wear Mildred’s Queen’s ring today. 

In later years, Mildred moved to Toronto to be closer to her children and grandchildren, and took great joy in getting to know her great-grandchildren, Samuel (named after her father), Liam (named after her mother), Miriam, Philip (named after her husband), and Jordan. 

Always eager to learn, she continued to take many courses in various areas of interest. Creative writing became a special passion for her, and she began to document her family history by writing short stories about events that shaped her life and some short fiction stories – all told, over 400 stories! Her stories, along with her love of family, are part of her legacy. 

Within just a few hours after the announcement of her passing went up on the Papermans website in Montreal, student after student after student posted tributes that made Mildred’s experiences as a teacher come to life. They describe her in these words: “outstanding teacher”, “a tribute to her profession”, “dynamic manner”, “incredible woman”, “a role model of intellectual rigour and comportment”, “an inspiration to those of us who knew her”, “a force of nature”, “I owe much of my rich vocabulary to her”, “an inspiring educator”, “I loved her”, “she was the best”, “formidable and wonderful lady”, and “left no stone unturned in advancing the education of each of her students.” These are tributes from students she taught over 60 years ago – she truly had an incredible impact on a generation of students! We all miss Mildred terribly, but know that she truly lived a beautiful and full life.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of (Mary) Suzanne Hamilton, who died peacefully at home in Victoria, B.C., on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025. 

She will be remembered as a committed teacher, world traveller, passionate environmentalist, keen writer of poetry, and advocate for those less privileged. 

She had a large circle of friends and family across the country including: Victoria, Toronto, Upper Cape N.B., and Halifax.

Suzanne is survived by her loving partner, Robert Wainman; brother, David (Arts’72, MA’73, PhD’80) (Laurie Webster, Arts'72, MAC’77); nephew, John (Sc’04) (Lindsay); niece, Elizabeth (Adam Corporon and daughter Abigail); and brother, Ian (Diana) and nephews Jordan and Andrew (Karli and son Thomas). 

Suzanne was predeceased by her parents, Jean (Davies) and John Miles Hamilton (BComH’42).

With gratitude for a life beautifully lived, Dr. Brian Everton Good passed away, age 80, on Sept. 5, 2025, in Pembroke with family at his side. 

Brian served his Ottawa Valley community with compassion as a family practitioner for over 35 years after graduating from Queen’s. Over the course of his career, he was an anesthetist, obstetrician, coroner, and chief of staff at Pembroke Regional Hospital. Despite a busy practice, he found the time to support his community as a volunteer at the Food Bank, the Eganville Legion, a member of the Eganville Rotary Club, a hockey coach and referee, an actor in community theatre, and as a chorister/member at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Eganville. 

He enjoyed many bike trips, golfing, playing cards, cottaging on Lake Dore, and international travel. Humble in manner and generous in spirit, he never sought praise but earned respect from all. Always “the softie”, Brian had a sensitive and empathetic heart. He could bring laughter and good cheer to every gathering. Brian was also known for his “competitive” gamesmanship and had an avid recycling hobby. 

He was predeceased by the love of his life, Helen; his parents, Harry and Ruth; and sister, Norah Broughton (Brent). He is survived and missed by his children, Geoff (Jane), Colleen (Bill) and Keith (Jenny); grandchildren, Scott, Josh, Claire, Everton, Thomas, and Gracie; brothers, Dennis (Gale) and Michael; and many nieces and nephews.

Linda Lamoureux passed away Feb. 20, 2024. She retired in March of 2020 as executive chair of Tribunals Ontario. She met her future husband, Rod Stableforth (MBA’77), at Queen’s and cherished her years there.

Barbara Jean Rigby passed away in her 79th year after a long fight with Alzheimer’s at the Village of Tansley Woods, Burlington, Ont., on June 17, 2025. Beloved wife of Malcolm (BASc’69); loving mother of Micheal; his dear partner, Julie; the late Marc (2011) (Sc’92, BA’97); and dear aunt of Scott Myers and his family, Jean and James. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, and the people who knew her over the 40 years in healthcare and community service.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Dean on June 24, 2025, surrounded by his family at Etobicoke General Hospital.

Dean was born in Toronto on Sept. 6, 1951, to the late Wilma and Horace Allison, who were the best parents any child could ever have.

“Memories are a legacy of love,” as a brother, father, grandfather, and a man. He is survived by his sister, Wendy Hassard; his children, Michael (Michelle), Courtney; their mother, Bonnie; and his grandchildren, Marcus and Makayla.

Growing up in Brampton, Dean had many wonderful friends and interests. After graduating from Central Peel S.S., he went on to study at McMaster University, and then law school at Queen’s. He practiced law in Brampton at Bowyer, Greenslade, Webster, and Allison for 42 years, retiring just three years ago at age 70.

Dean was a brilliant lawyer, whose integrity and passion left a lasting impact. He volunteered for Children’s Aid over several years, helping many children in Ontario. 

More than a legal mind, he was a kind and loyal friend, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. They described him as someone with the biggest smile and laugh, who was always there for them. Those closest to him know he lived life to the fullest – with heart, generosity, and purpose. 

He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, and the community he served so well.

Dean was engaged in sports throughout his life, playing hockey until three years ago, while also partaking in golf, scuba diving, and skydiving. He loved travelling, watching his beloved Chicago Blackhawks, and the company of his many friends. Every summer he enjoyed going to the Allison family compound of cottages on Otty Lake near Perth, Ont.

Brenda Anne Maunder (nee Bradley) of Ottawa, Ont., passed away on June 29, 2025. 

Brenda was the wife of Les Maunder and daughter of Bueth ‘Brad’ and Maybelle Bradley (nee Koen). 

Brenda fought a short and courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia in May/June, and died peacefully in hospice care. 

Born in Ottawa in 1942, Brenda was a proud Queen’s alum, staying in touch with several classmates over the years, attending many alumni events and homecoming weekends until her 82nd year. Brenda graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (1962) and a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (1963). A lifelong learner, Brenda also completed a Diploma of Fine Arts in Music at the University of Calgary (1987) and a Diploma in Art Education from the University of British Columbia (1988). Beyond school, Brenda always brought a genuine curiosity to learn about everyone she met. 

Brenda married Les Maunder (who she met at the venue of a Queen’s alumni event in Montreal) on Dec. 20, 1968. Brenda and Les were proud parents of two daughters, Maria and Rosanna. The family resided in Newfoundland from 1979–2001, and Brenda taught French, music, art, and phys-ed with the Avalon Consolidated School Board during this time, making an impact on the lives of many young Newfoundlanders. 

Brenda was a sparky dynamo and adventurist, determined to live life to the fullest. She was active at the gym, and in swimming, and downhill and cross-country skiing in her 83rd year. She loved to travel to new places and was always planning the next trip. She gravitated to social groups including: book clubs, bridge clubs, guitar jams, ski trips with the RA Centre, and she volunteered with the Ottawa Newcomers Club and the Ottawa Chapter of the International Friendship Force. Golden Lake was Brenda’s special place, and she spent almost every summer of her life there. Her parents established the summer properties in the summer of 1941. She volunteered with the Golden Lake Cottagers Association and was a regular at the local golf courses. 

Brenda’s spirit will live on at Brenlarken place, especially at the campfire where her guitar playing and songs marked many occasions. She had a remarkable ability to bring people together, and these gatherings shared by extended family and friends will forever be embedded in our hearts. 

Brenda is survived by Les, Rosanna, Maria and her husband, Michael, and grandchildren Samantha and Max. Brenda was instrumental in shaping their lives and their energy and enthusiasm for school and sports. Brenda was preceded in death by brothers: Lawrence (2013), and Kenneth (2009), who studied medicine at Queen’s.

Thomas McLean Poaps, April 10, 1950 – May 8, 2025

With deep sadness we report that Tom, while being treated for cancer, suffered a stroke at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was hospitalized a few days before he died.

Tom was born in Ottawa. When he was quite young, the family relocated to Stanstead, Que., where his father was in the family business. Tom attended primary and secondary school in Stanstead and then attended Queen’s, where he became a mechanical engineer. Two years in Montreal followed and then Harvard University. After a short stay in the banking sector, he became associated with a real estate developer in the Boston area. He then established his own real estate operation in Bradenton, Florida. Tom was planning a second marriage plus a trip to Africa.

Tom was a keen woodsman and loved to take his beautiful Weimaraner “Hunter” out partridge hunting in the fall in the woods around Stanstead. The house in Bradenton was situated on a canal, so he was also an active boatman in the spring. Tom ran in the Boston Marathon and was ever proud of the fact that he finished “in the middle.” Recently he had become an enthusiast of antique cars and was the proud owner of two vintage Cadillac Eldorados.

Tom is mourned by his fiancée, Amy Haggerty; his sister, Joan V. Drechsler; his uncle, Richard Poaps, and Richard’s children, Richard, John, and Susan; cousins, Margot Lincoln and William Poaps, and their families. He was predeceased by his father, Philip, and by his mother, Margaret (Broach) Poaps in 2019.
