Pride Month and the Power of Belonging

Two people stand at a Pride event holding handmade signs.

Image Description: A photograph taken at an outdoor Pride celebration shows two individuals standing side by side beneath bright red canopy tents. Both are smiling and holding large handmade signs. The person on the left holds a sign that reads “Here, Queer, Teaching Next Year,” with the word “Teaching” written in rainbow-coloured letters. The person on the right holds a sign reading “We Support All Students,” with rainbow colours incorporated into parts of the lettering. A rainbow Pride flag is visible behind them, and numerous attendees can be seen throughout the event space. The image conveys a welcoming atmosphere of inclusion, support, and celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and allies.

Every June, communities across Canada and around the world come together to celebrate Pride Month to honour the history, resilience, achievements, and diversity of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities. While Pride is often associated with colourful parades, rainbow flags, and celebrations, its significance goes far beyond visible symbols. Pride Month is also a time for reflection, education, advocacy, and a renewed commitment to creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.

Queen’s University recently marked the beginning of Pride Month with a flag-raising ceremony that reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and equity. Such events serve as important reminders that institutions and communities must continue working toward environments where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated. Public expressions of support help strengthen community connections while encouraging ongoing conversations about equality and human rights. However, visibility alone is not enough. Meaningful inclusion requires continuous effort to remove barriers, challenge discrimination, and ensure that policies and practices support people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

has long been at the heart of local Pride celebrations, bringing together residents, organizations, businesses, and allies in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Through educational initiatives, community events, advocacy efforts, and celebrations, Kingston Pride helps create opportunities for connection, understanding, and empowerment. Pride events provide spaces where individuals can celebrate their identities, share their experiences, and build supportive networks. They also offer allies an opportunity to learn, engage, and demonstrate solidarity. These gatherings strengthen community bonds and reinforce the message that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued.

How to Be an Ally During Pride Month

Pride Month offers an opportunity for everyone to contribute to a more inclusive society. Some ways to show support include:

  •  about 2SLGBTQIA+ histories, experiences, and issues.

  • Listening to and amplifying diverse voices and perspectives.

  • Challenging stereotypes, discrimination, and harmful language.

  • Supporting organizations and initiatives that advocate for equality.

  • Creating welcoming and inclusive environments in your workplace, school, or community.

  • Participating in  and celebrations.

Being an ally is not limited to one month of the year. Inclusion is an ongoing commitment that requires consistent action and engagement.
