Dear Faculty, staff and students of the School of Policy Studies

Today I am announcing a change in academic leadership in the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) School of Policy Studies (SPS). Eugene (Gene) Lang has stepped down from the role of Acting Director, effective February 27, 2026.

We are grateful to Gene for his service and leadership contributions, and we are pleased that he will continue as a member of our faculty. During his time as director, Gene brought renewed energy and visibility to SPS, and that spirit will continue to benefit our community through his teaching and engagement with students.

Transitions can bring uncertainty, and we want to assure you that our academic programs, strategic priorities, and daily operations remain steady and fully supported. To ensure continuity, James Fraser, Associate Dean (Graduate) has agreed to serve as SPS Acting Director. James has already begun meeting with key stakeholders, building on the strong relationships he has established with faculty and students. I am grateful to James for stepping into this role and for reinforcing SPS’s vital mission within both the faculty and the broader institution.

James will continue in the role through the end of June, at which time we will appoint a new Stauffer-Dunning Chair and SPS Director. Our focus remains on supporting our students, faculty, and staff in the months ahead as we move forward together with clarity, united in our commitment to strengthening the program quality and distinguished reputation that SPS has established.
