    Chris Jackman and Shari Porter

    – Mus’05 and Mus'05

    Fall 2023

Chris Jackman and Shari Porter lived in Toronto for about 16 years, working in arts education and raising their son KJ (age seven), but started considering a move east after the COVID-19 pandemic. While browsing real estate listings, they fell in love with the Old Confidence Lodge, a former Oddfellows Hall in Riverport, NS, which has a stage, balcony seating, and family-sized apartment on the top floor. They took the leap, sold their house, and moved to the Lodge in late 2022. There have been many twists and turns along the way, including the discovery of a surprise pregnancy the same week they put in an offer (and the welcome birth of daughter Amy in January, 2023), plus a litany of unplanned renovation costs. Still, this family is thriving in their new home. Chris and Shari have launched a GoFundMe and are producing concerts at the local community centre to help pay for renovations that will bring the Lodge up to code. They are also working closely with local artists and making plans for future creative projects, including a children’s show sponsored by Lunenburg Foundation for the Arts. Once it opens this fall, the Old Confidence Lodge will host music, theatre, weddings, and special events, as well as youth and adult education programs. Folks interested in following their journey, donating to the renovation fund, or learning about upcoming events can find them on Facebook and on Instagram using the handle:

  • Pierre's Song: A History of the BeauprĂ©s of Portsmouth by David More

    1990s

    John David More

    – MPA’91, MA’15, PhD’21

    Fall 2023

John David More recently published his seventh book in collaboration with Marie Edwards. Pierre's Song: The Beaupres of Portsmouth, published by Friesenpress, is a colourful history of the Beaupre family, which moved to Kingston in 1814 to work in the British Royal Dockyard. The men became well-known shipbuilders (steam and sail) in Kingston, nearby Portsmouth Village, and throughout the region. Edouard Beaupre was one of the founders of the village municipal government; became its tax collector; and built the Portsmouth Tavern in 1864, which remains a popular watering hole to this day. Edouard's son, Peter Moffat Beaupre, became a guard and quarry supervisor for Kingston Penitentiary and the family contributed materially to the construction of the Catholic Church of the Good Thief in Portsmouth Village. The book illuminates the little known history of how much French Canadians contributed to the survival and growth of Kingston and Ontario.

More recently, he was asked to design and deliver a course in Saint Paul’s faculty of canon law on “Canon Law and Conflict Resolution” – apparently a first anywhere in the world – as well as to present modules in English and French at Saint Paul’s summer school for leaders of religious institutes, and to the Canadian Canon Law Society.
