Understanding Your Fees
Tuition fees are mandatory fees that cover the core costs of a student's academic program. They are calculated and posted to student accounts each term (fall, winter, and summer) once a student is enrolled in their courses. Payment due dates are established each year for each term (How to Pay).
Each course a student enrolls in has a set number of units (or credits) associated with it. Unless otherwise stated, tuition is calculated based on the number of units a student is enrolled in.
The Student Assistance Levy is a fee, applied on a per term basis, charged to students to help improve existing scholarships and student assistance programs, fund the Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP), and support the learning environment.
There is no ceiling on the amount of SAL assessed.

Students who are not covered under a Canadian Provincial or Territorial Health Insurance plan, including international students and exchange students, are required to have University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) coverage.
In Ontario, there are two different types of health insurance plans: primary and supplementary health insurance. When eligible, all students are encouraged to have coverage in both a primary and a supplementary health plan.
Ancillary Fees support activities and services provided by the university and by student governments, and their faculty/school societies, and clubs.
Tuition is assessed according to the program that the course is enrolled under. Students should be prepared to pay an amount that may be higher than the accredited academic unit.
The Audit Fee is set at 50% of the unit fee, plus the Student Assistance Levy. Please note that audit fees are non-refundable after the full refund date.
Students who are not a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or a person registered as Indigenous within the meaning of the Indian Act, are assessed at the international fee rate.
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities outlines a number of exemptions which may be applicable to some International students. Each of these cases must be examined individually by fee assessment staff in the Office of the University Registrar. Please visit our International Tuition Fee Status Change page for information on exemption categories and how to request an exemption.
Please note that The Board of Trustees reserves the right to make changes, without notice, to tuition and fees.
- If fee changes are approved after publication deadlines, every effort will be made to notify students affected
- Lack of notification does not exempt a student from paying the appropriate fee
- Normally, fee increases, if applicable, become effective September 1 each year
- Acceptance of fee payment does not necessarily imply acceptance of registration
