Kingston, Ontario, is one of those cities that really surprises students. Sure, it's known for historic charm, Â鶹ÍøÕ¾, and the pretty waterfront, but I quickly realized there’s so much more beyond the obvious spots. Whether you're looking for a quiet place to study, an unusual cafe to hang out with friends, or an adventure off the beaten track to clear your head after exams, Kingston has lots to offer, a few hidden gems that might help make your student life here a little more memorable. So come along as I take you on a tour of Kingston’s most underappreciated treasures that all students should see!
Nature:
Although Kingston's waterfront is renowned, many students bypass Lake Ontario Park, within an easy bike ride or bus journey from the downtown area. It quickly became one of my favourite spots to relax or take a walk by the lake. In summer, locals enjoy picnic areas, playgrounds, and outdoor sports, as well as a small beach area to cool off in. It's a great retreat for the outdoorsy person not wanting to travel too far from the city.
Another peaceful escape I came to appreciate is Lemoine Point. It is a perfect place to hike, birdwatch, or get lost in. There is a series of trails around the area, along with some amazing views of the lake and woodlands. It's an underrated place to let loose after a stressful week.
Shopping:
When I first arrived in Kingston, I quickly learned that thrift shopping here is an adventure. Value Village and Talize serve up an eclectic mix from second-hand clothes to furniture, utensils, toys, and books, but a little bit of everything, at low prices, is always on the shelves, always different. Each visit feels like a treasure hunt: something unique for yourself, or a creative gift for someone. There is such a variety that it is hard to leave without taking something home, and the coolest thing is to imagine the stories of each item.
The Kingston Public Market is one of Ontario’s oldest open-air markets, and it’s full of hidden gems. You’ll find fresh, local produce, homemade baked goods, handmade crafts, and other unique items that aren’t available in regular stores. It's a great place to support local businesses and find something unique for yourself or as a gift.
Culture:
Though The Isabel is widely recognized as a venue with amazing performances, I was surprised by how many students overlook it. From classical music to theater, there's a wide variety of performance types that go on throughout the year at the waterfront center near campus. Located within it is an art gallery with constantly changing exhibitions. Many of the shows here are world-class yet much more intimate than one would find in larger venues.
Fort Henry, a national historic site, is often packed with tourists in the summer, but it’s still a cool spot to visit, especially for history lovers. Located on a hill overlooking Kingston, it offers stunning views of the city and the lake. The fort also holds reenactments, interactive exhibits, and events throughout the year.
Food:
When it comes to food, Kingston offers a wide variety of options to suit all tastes. Mikong, for example, is one of my go-to spots, they offer delicious meals of Asian cuisine with a price discount – don't forget your student ID! At Pasta Genova, the Italian fresh sandwiches are very popular, well-filled, and perfect for a practical and flavorful meal. And when I needed a treat to warm up on a cold day, Coffee Way never disappointed with its incredible donuts and rich hot chocolate.
These are just some of the treasures that Kingston holds inside. Full of charming corners and unique flavors, the city is waiting for whoever dares to walk its streets. You surely will find your own favorites and create special memories while exploring what makes Kingston such a welcoming place.
