Scholarships & Awards

Various scholarships, awards, and bursaries are available to Master's and Doctoral students within the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy. These are available to supplement student stipends or aid in covering travel costs for conferences/field work, and are sourced from within the Department, the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (SGSPA) at Â鶹ÍøÕ¾, as well as external sources at the provincial and national level. The list below does not provide an exhaustive list of available scholarships, awards, and bursaries, and so students are expected to refer to the SGSPA Awards & Bursaries page, as well as to monitor emails and research other opportunities regarding scholarships, awards, and bursaries.

Conference/Travel Awards

The department provides limited travel support for currently registered full-time graduate students (Master’s and PhD) via the Cave Travel Award and the SGSPA Conference Travel Award (CTA), which are now combined into a single application. Travel awards can range from ~400 to 1000$ depending on demand and available funds. Each student can hold at most one award per academic year. Awards will be preferentially given for travel to present at a conference. Requests for one-off field research trips will also be considered, but the application should include an explanation for why this doesn’t fall under your supervisor’s regular research expenses. To hold the award, your supervisor must agree to cover remaining expenses.

The department will decide based on the application which funds (Cave or CTA) are best suited for each request.

Applications for awards to Travel over the Summer term (May-August) must be submitted by April 1st for consideration. These will be allocated via an internal competition adjudicated by the graduate steering committee.

Applications for travel outside of summer term are also accepted on a rolling basis, and are subject to available funds.

The Harold M. Cave award was established by the estate of Harold M. Cave, B.A.1925, M.A. 1926 and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to funding-eligible Master’s or Ph.D. level students enrolled in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy, in the School of Graduate Studies.
