Addressing the aftermath

Across the globe, millions of people face displacement, instability, and loss of essential services due to war, migration, or natural disasters. These crises often result in significant health challenges, particularly for women, children, and members of other equity deserving groups.

As the Canada Research Chair in Humanitarian Health Equity, Dr. Susan Bartels studies how conflict, forced migration, and humanitarian responses influence the health and wellbeing of affected populations. Working with partners in regions such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, she examines the social and environmental conditions that shape risk and resilience during crises. Her research also evaluates new tools to strengthen communication and support more informed and responsive humanitarian action. Dr. Bartels’ work is conducted in partnership with communities and local organizations, centring local leadership and community-defined priorities to generate evidence that reflects lived experience and informs policies and interventions that reduce harm, promote equity, and improve health outcomes during and after humanitarian emergencies.
