We support undergraduate, graduate and non-degree seeking students by providing academic accommodations tailored to each students' individual disability-related needs.

Students who have a permanent, persistent/prolonged, or temporary disability in the following categories are eligible to register:

  • attention/neurodiversity
  • hearing/vision
  • learning disability
  • medical/brain Injury
  • mental health
  • physical disability

 

Step-by-step Intake Guide

For students new to accessibility services
Register as early as mid-June using this our comprehensive Intake Guide or by following the registration steps below

Steps to Register

  1.    Log in to the using your and password.

  2.    Complete the intake form when prompted.

  3.    Submit your documentation according to the required documentation criteria*.

  4.    Wait 4-5 business days for an email from an intake coordinator with next steps.

  5.    Self-book an intake appointment through Ventus as soon as you receive an email with the name of your accessibility advisor.

  6.    Meet with your accessibility advisor to discuss accommodation needs.

  7.    View your classroom accommodations in Ventus (opt-out as necessary).

  8.    View your assessment accommodations in Ventus (opt-out as necessary).


*If you do not have the required documentation at the time of registration, you may upload other documents that indicate your need for accommodations. Any student experiencing a barrier related to a disability or impairment, whether currently documented or awaiting documentation, may be eligible for accommodations.

 

Common Questions

We will review high school Individualized Education Program (IEP) however, accommodations students received are not automatically transferred to university.

Approved accommodations are informed primarily by the functional impacts students may experience in courses, and are based on:

  • first-person experience
  • review of medical documentation
  • an understanding of how specific barriers may present in courses 
  • academic requirements and standards

Visit on-campus supports for information about accessibility for people with disabilities at Queen’s.

  • Students do not need to prepare for this 30–45-minute meeting  
  • Students will be asked to describe how their disability functionally impacts their academics in the classroom, with assignments, and exams. 
  • Accessibility Advisors will: 
    • take notes but all information is kept confidential (see Statement of Confidentiality)  
    • make recommendations for accommodations based on your functional impacts based on documentation and students’ first-person experience. 
    • explain recommended accommodations and show how to apply them in Ventus. 
    • recommend other campus resources that might be helpful. 
    • send an email afterwards with details about how to apply accommodations and other useful information.

Students with disabilities have...

a right to:

  • equal access and equal opportunity to participate in the academic experience

  • be treated with dignity and respect

  • appropriate, individualized accommodation

  • protection and security of their confidential information

  • timely service provision, consistent with notice provided by the student

  • prompt, equitable investigation and resolution of concerns

a responsibility to:

  • notify the university, through Student Accessibility Services, of any changes to medical diagnosis or changes to program of study that may require a review of accommodations

  • provide this notification as early as possible, respecting any administrative deadlines (e.g., semester-specific deadlines to register for accommodated exams)

  • provide Student Accessibility Services with documentation meeting criteria if receiving interim accommodations and wish for the accommodations to continue

  • collaborate with Student Accessibility Services staff, instructors, graduate supervisors, faculty/school office staff, or others to develop, implement and update academic accommodation plan

  • communicate accommodation plan to instructors, graduate research supervisors, faculty administration, the Exams Office and others, as appropriate and where classroom learning/evaluation accommodations are needed, with as much advance notice as possible. We cannot retroactively provide accommodations to any in course deliverable (i.e., test, exam, assignment) if this communication step is not completed
